RFLP stands for Restriction fragment length polymorphism, a genetics abbreviation.
Variation in the lengths of DNA fragments produced when DNA is cut with a restriction enzyme, caused by differences in sequence that create or destroy cutting sites. RFLPs were the first DNA markers used to build human genetic maps and to locate disease genes.
Example: The RFLP analysis showed both parents carried the allele that destroys the MstII site.
Usage notes
Commonly pronounced "rif-lip." David Botstein and colleagues proposed using RFLPs to map the human genome in 1980, and in 1983 an RFLP marker located the Huntington's disease gene on chromosome 4. SNP arrays and sequencing have largely replaced RFLP analysis.
