1. No evidence of disease

Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations

Status in which tests and examinations show no detectable cancer after treatment. It describes current findings rather than guaranteeing cure, because microscopic disease below detection limits can remain.

Example: Surveillance CT shows NED 3 years after resection; continue imaging every 6 months.

Patients often use "NED" as a milestone in survivorship communities. Clinicians are cautious about the word "cure," particularly for cancers that can recur late, such as hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. NED differs from complete response, a formal trial measurement, and from remission, a term used especially in blood cancers.

2. Netherlands

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Dutch national teams appear as NED, from Nederland, in IOC and FIFA results, rather than the ISO alpha-3 code NLD. Dutch teams play in orange, after the royal House of Orange-Nassau.

Example: NED beat USA 3-1 in the round of 16.

The Netherlands men's team has lost three World Cup finals (1974, 1978 and 2010). Speed skating is the Dutch Olympic specialty.

3. Non-executive director

Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations

Member of a company's board who is not part of the management team and provides independent oversight, challenge and expertise. NEDs sit on board committees such as audit, remuneration and nomination, and are a fixture of UK, Irish, Australian and Asian corporate governance.

Example: The company appointed a former central banker as a NED to strengthen the risk committee.

For larger listed companies, the UK Corporate Governance Code expects at least half the board, excluding the chair, to be independent non-executive directors. The comparable US terms are outside director or independent director. NEDs are paid fees rather than salaries.
