CKD stands for Chronic kidney disease, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Kidney damage or reduced function lasting more than three months, defined by an eGFR below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or markers such as albuminuria. KDIGO stages it by filtration rate (G1–G5) and albuminuria (A1–A3); diabetes and high blood pressure cause most cases, and treatment aims to slow progression and protect the heart.
Example: CKD stage G3b A2, eGFR 38, UACR 120 mg/g; continue lisinopril and add empagliflozin.
Usage notes
In the US roughly one in seven adults has CKD, and most of them do not know it because early disease causes no symptoms. Cardiovascular death is more likely than progression to kidney failure for many patients. SGLT2 inhibitors, RAAS blockers and finerenone have changed management since 2019. The staging grid comes from KDIGO guidelines published in 2012 and updated in 2024. Pronounced as letters; British usage is identical.
