CategoriesMedical

AVF stands for Arteriovenous fistula, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.

Surgical connection between an artery and a vein, usually in the arm, which enlarges over weeks to provide durable access for hemodialysis needles. It is the preferred access because it has the lowest rates of infection and clotting.

Example: Left radiocephalic AVF with strong thrill and bruit; ready for cannulation next week.

Usage notes

The radiocephalic fistula was described by Brescia, Cimino and colleagues in 1966. A new fistula typically needs about six weeks or longer to mature. Patients are taught to check daily for a thrill and to avoid blood pressure cuffs and blood draws in that arm. In cardiology an AVF may also refer to an abnormal arteriovenous connection elsewhere.
