1. Average (avg)
Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations · also used in general use
Shorthand for average, usually the arithmetic mean: the sum of the values divided by their number. It appears in sports statistics, dashboards, spreadsheets (AVERAGE) and database queries (AVG).
Example: SELECT region, AVG(sale_amount) FROM orders GROUP BY region;
"Average" can loosely mean mean, median or mode, so statisticians prefer to name the measure. Baseball's batting average (AVG or BA) is hits divided by at-bats, a proportion rather than a mean of values. In SQL, AVG ignores NULL values, which can change results unexpectedly.
2. Batting average
Sports · Baseball Abbreviations
Hits divided by official at-bats, displayed as a three-digit decimal such as .287. It has been baseball's best-known hitting statistic for more than a century, and .300 remains the traditional mark of an excellent hitter.
Example: He's hitting .312 AVG with runners in scoring position this month.
Also written BA. Ted Williams's .406 in 1941 was the last .400 season in the major leagues, and Ty Cobb holds the highest career average at about .367. Read aloud without the decimal point: ".287" is "two eighty-seven". Analysts now prefer on-base and slugging measures because batting average ignores walks and power.
3. Arteriovenous graft
Medical · Nephrology & Urology Abbreviations
Dialysis access in which a synthetic tube, usually PTFE, is surgically placed under the skin to connect an artery and a vein. It can be used sooner than a fistula, often within two to three weeks, but is more prone to clotting, narrowing and infection.
Example: Clotted left forearm AVG, no thrill; IR for thrombectomy before dialysis today.
Grafts are chosen when veins are too small or damaged for a fistula. Stenosis usually develops where the graft joins the vein. Some newer early-cannulation grafts can be used within days. "Fistula first, catheter last" campaigns promoted fistulas over grafts and catheters.
