ALDS stands for American League Division Series, a baseball abbreviation.
Best-of-five playoff round in the American League, played after the Wild Card Series. Under the 12-team format introduced in 2022, the top two division winners in the league receive byes straight into the ALDS.
Example: The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the ALDS with a walk-off win in the Bronx.
Usage notes
Division Series were first played in the strike-shortened 1981 season and became permanent in 1995, when each league split into three divisions and added a wild card. Teams that win the Wild Card Series join the bye teams in the two ALDS matchups. The National League equivalent is the NLDS.
