1. Certified in Infection Prevention and Control

Medical · Healthcare Credential Abbreviations

Credential awarded by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) to infection preventionists who pass its exam. Candidates are often nurses, medical technologists or epidemiologists.

Example: Infection preventionist, BSN, RN, CIC, leads CLABSI reduction work.

Eligibility requires direct responsibility for an infection prevention program and post-secondary education in a health field. Recertification is every five years. CBIC also offers the LTC-CIP credential for infection preventionists working in long-term care. In urology CIC means clean intermittent catheterization.

2. Clean intermittent catheterization

Medical · Nephrology & Urology Abbreviations

Regular emptying of the bladder by inserting a clean catheter through the urethra several times a day and removing it immediately. It is the standard management for neurogenic bladder from spina bifida, spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis.

Example: Spina bifida with neurogenic bladder; CIC every 4 hours with 10 Fr catheter.

Jack Lapides introduced the clean, rather than sterile, technique in 1972, showing it was safe and practical. Intermittent catheterization carries a lower infection risk than an indwelling catheter. Bacteria are often present in the urine of people who self-catheterize, but treatment is needed only for symptoms.

3. Community interest company

Business & Finance · Company Type Abbreviations

UK limited company created for social enterprises that want to use profits and assets for community benefit. A CIC must pass a community interest test and is subject to an "asset lock" restricting distributions and transfers of assets.

Example: The café is run as a CIC, reinvesting its profits in training for young people leaving care.

Introduced in 2005 under the Companies (Audit, Investigations and Community Enterprise) Act 2004 and supervised by the Regulator of Community Interest Companies. CICs limited by shares can pay capped dividends, but they do not receive the tax reliefs available to charities. Names end with "community interest company" or "CIC."

4. Combat information center

Military · Military Term Abbreviations

Space aboard a Navy warship where radar, sonar and communications information is gathered, displayed and evaluated to fight the ship, staffed by operations specialists and watch officers.

Example: The tactical action officer ran the missile engagement from CIC.

Aircraft carriers and amphibious ships have similar centers that also coordinate aircraft. The Royal Navy calls the space the operations room. CIC was developed during World War II to cope with the volume of radar data.
