CategoriesMedical

CVVH stands for Continuous venovenous hemofiltration, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.

Mode of continuous renal replacement therapy that removes solutes by convection: plasma water is pushed across the filter membrane and replaced with sterile replacement fluid. It is particularly effective at clearing middle-sized molecules.

Example: CVVH with prefilter replacement fluid, citrate anticoagulation; net fluid removal 100 mL/h.

Usage notes

"Venovenous" means blood is drawn from and returned to a vein through a double-lumen catheter, unlike the older arteriovenous techniques that relied on the patient's blood pressure. Replacement fluid can be given before (prefilter) or after (postfilter) the dialyzer. CVVHD uses diffusion with dialysate instead.
