CRRT stands for Continuous renal replacement therapy, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Slow, round-the-clock dialysis used in intensive care units for patients with acute kidney injury who are too unstable for intermittent hemodialysis. Gentle fluid removal over 24 hours avoids the blood pressure drops of conventional sessions.
Example: Septic shock on two pressors with AKI and anuria; CRRT started at 25 mL/kg/h effluent dose.
Usage notes
Modes include CVVH, CVVHD and CVVHDF, which differ in whether solutes are removed by convection, diffusion or both. Regional citrate anticoagulation is preferred in many centers to keep the circuit from clotting without systemic bleeding risk. The KDIGO recommended dose is an effluent of 20–25 mL/kg/h.
