C-I stands for Schedule I controlled substance, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Federal classification for substances with a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in US treatment and a lack of accepted safety under medical supervision. Heroin, LSD, MDMA and psilocybin are Schedule I.
Example: The research protocol for psilocybin required a DEA C-I researcher registration.
Usage notes
Schedules come from the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 and are maintained by the DEA. Schedule I drugs cannot be prescribed, but registered researchers may study them, and the FDA has granted breakthrough therapy designations for psilocybin and MDMA-assisted therapies. Also written CI or "Schedule 1".
