1. Bitcoin

Technology & Computing · Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Abbreviations

Bitcoin, the first and largest cryptocurrency by market value, quoted on exchanges and price trackers under the ticker BTC. It is a decentralized digital currency recorded on a public blockchain secured by proof-of-work mining, with supply capped at 21 million coins.

Example: She bought 0.05 BTC on the exchange and moved it to a hardware wallet the same day.

Described in a white paper published on October 31, 2008, by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, whose identity remains unknown; the network launched with the genesis block on January 3, 2009. Each bitcoin divides into 100 million satoshis. New coins are issued as mining rewards that halve roughly every four years, most recently in April 2024. By convention, capitalized "Bitcoin" refers to the network and lowercase "bitcoin" to the currency units. Some exchanges use the alternative code XBT.

2. Behind the counter

Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations

Nonprescription products that are kept behind the pharmacy counter and require a pharmacist or technician to hand them over, often with ID and quantity limits. Pseudoephedrine products are the main US example.

Example: Sudafed is BTC here, so bring a photo ID to the pharmacy register.

Federal law since 2006 has required pseudoephedrine to be kept behind the counter with a purchase logbook. Emergency contraception (levonorgestrel) was BTC for adults before the FDA removed age restrictions in 2013. Some states also place syringes or certain cough syrups behind the counter.
