XBT stands for Bitcoin (ISO-style currency code), a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
An alternative code for bitcoin formed in the style of ISO 4217 currency codes, where an initial X marks currencies not tied to a country, as with XAU for gold. Some exchanges, futures markets and data terminals quote prices in XBT instead of BTC.
Example: The derivatives desk quotes the perpetual contract in XBT against the US dollar.
Usage notes
Bitcoin has not been officially added to ISO 4217, so XBT remains an informal convention. BTC could not become an ISO code because codes begin with a country code, and BT is Bhutan's. Kraken and BitMEX are among the platforms that have used XBT.
