VHF stands for Very high frequency, a physics abbreviation.
Radio band from 30 to 300 megahertz, used for FM broadcasting (88-108 MHz), aircraft voice communication (118-137 MHz), marine radio, some television channels and two-way radios. VHF travels mostly in straight lines, so its range is limited to around the horizon.
Example: Boaters monitor VHF channel 16, the international distress and calling frequency.
Usage notes
VHF's line-of-sight range explains why aircraft at cruising altitude can talk to controllers hundreds of kilometers away, while handheld radios at sea level reach only a few dozen kilometers. In TV, VHF channels 2-13 in North America sit below the UHF channels.
