1. Terms of service
Law & Legal · Contract Abbreviations
Agreement users must accept to use an online service, app or platform, setting rules for acceptable conduct, account termination, content licenses, fees, disclaimers and dispute resolution. Breaking the ToS can lead to suspension or closure of an account.
Example: The platform banned the account for violating the ToS on automated scraping.
Also written TOS and sometimes called terms of use (ToU). Many consumer ToS contain mandatory arbitration clauses and class-action waivers, which the Supreme Court has largely upheld under the Federal Arbitration Act, notably in AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion (2011). Regulators such as the FTC can act against retroactive or deceptive changes to terms.
2. Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS)
Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations
Compression of the nerves or blood vessels passing between the neck and armpit, through the space bounded by the first rib, collarbone and scalene muscles. Most cases are neurogenic, causing arm pain, numbness and weakness; venous and arterial forms are rarer but more urgent.
Example: Effort thrombosis of the subclavian vein in a swimmer: venous TOS, thrombolysis then first rib resection.
Venous TOS presenting as sudden arm swelling after strenuous activity is called Paget-Schroetter syndrome. Neurogenic TOS is controversial because objective tests are often normal. Physical therapy is first-line, while first rib resection with scalenectomy is reserved for refractory or vascular cases.
