1. MOT test
Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations
Annual inspection required for most cars, motorcycles and vans in Great Britain once they are three years old, checking roadworthiness, safety equipment and emissions at authorized garages. Driving without a valid MOT certificate can bring a fine.
Example: The car failed its MOT because of a worn tire and a broken brake light.
The test was introduced in 1960 by the Ministry of Transport, whose initials it still carries. Vehicles over 40 years old can be exempt. Northern Ireland runs its own vehicle testing at government centers, starting at four years. MOT history for any vehicle can be checked online with the registration number.
2. Ministry of Transport test
Transportation & Travel · Driving Abbreviations
Annual roadworthiness and emissions inspection required in Great Britain for most cars over three years old. An MOT certificate is needed to tax a vehicle, and driving without a valid one can bring a fine.
Example: The car failed its MOT on worn brake pads and a cracked windscreen.
Named after the Ministry of Transport, which introduced the test in 1960. Tests are carried out at approved garages under DVSA oversight, and results are recorded online. Northern Ireland requires the test from four years old. "MOT" is also used informally for any checkup, as in "my bike needs an MOT."
3. Master of Occupational Therapy
Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations
Entry-level graduate degree that qualifies students to sit for the NBCOT certification exam and become licensed occupational therapists. Programs accredited by ACOTE usually last two to three years, including fieldwork placements.
Example: The school district is hiring an OT with an MOT or OTD and state licensure.
Also written MSOT or MS in Occupational Therapy. After years of debate about requiring the doctorate, ACOTE affirmed in 2019 that both the master's and the entry-level OTD remain acceptable routes into practice. The doctoral option adds a 14-week capstone experience.
