Stands forInternational Fuel Tax Agreement
CategoriesTransportation & Travel

IFTA stands for International Fuel Tax Agreement, a driving abbreviation.

Agreement among the 48 contiguous US states and 10 Canadian provinces that simplifies fuel-tax reporting for trucks traveling between jurisdictions. Carriers file one quarterly return, and taxes are redistributed according to miles driven in each state or province.

Example: Our IFTA return shows we drove 12,000 miles in Texas last quarter but bought most of our fuel in Oklahoma.

Usage notes

Qualifying vehicles display IFTA decals on both sides of the cab. Carriers must keep detailed records of miles and fuel purchases by jurisdiction. It works alongside the International Registration Plan (IRP), which apportions registration fees.
