LMT stands for Local mean time, a time zone abbreviation.
Mean solar time at a specific longitude, used by towns before standard time zones. Each degree of longitude shifts local mean time by four minutes, so in the 1800s neighboring cities kept slightly different clocks.
Example: Historic tide tables list high water in LMT, corrected for the harbor's longitude.
Usage notes
Railroads drove the change: US and Canadian railroads adopted standard time zones on November 18, 1883, and Congress made them law in the Standard Time Act of 1918. The IANA time zone database used by computers records an LMT offset for each region covering the period before standard time.
