Weather below the minimums for visual flight, such as low cloud, fog or poor visibility, in which an aircraft may be flown only under IFR by an instrument-rated pilot. Flying inside a cloud counts as IMC even when visibility above and below it is excellent.
Example: The Cessna entered IMC near the ridge line, and the noninstrument-rated pilot lost control within minutes.
Pilots log "actual instrument" time only in real IMC, as opposed to simulated instrument time under a view-limiting hood. Spatial disorientation is the main danger, since the inner ear can make a turning aircraft feel level. A 1954 University of Illinois study found noninstrument pilots lost control an average of 178 seconds after entering instrument conditions.
