LAANC stands for Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability, an aviation abbreviation.
FAA system giving drone pilots near-instant authorization to fly in controlled airspace near airports, through approved apps, up to the altitude limits shown on UAS facility maps. Before it existed, such approvals could take weeks or months.
Example: I got LAANC approval in about ten seconds to fly at 200 feet a mile from the regional airport.
Usage notes
Pronounced "lance." Introduced in 2017 and expanded nationwide in 2018. It serves both Part 107 commercial pilots and recreational flyers. Requests above the facility-map altitude must go through the slower FAA DroneZone process, which still requires review by air traffic staff.
