LIFR stands for Low instrument flight rules, an aviation abbreviation.
Weather category for the poorest conditions: ceilings below 500 feet or visibility less than 1 statute mile. In LIFR many instrument approaches are below minimums, and only crews and aircraft approved for low-visibility precision approaches can expect to land.
Example: Fog has the coast at LIFR until about 10 a.m., with visibility a quarter mile at the airport.
Usage notes
Shown in magenta on aviation weather maps. By the National Weather Service definitions, IFR covers ceilings of 500 to below 1,000 feet or visibility of 1 to below 3 miles, and LIFR is anything lower. Category II and III ILS approaches, which need special training and equipment, let airliners land in some LIFR conditions.
