A virtual machine sold by a hosting company as a private server with dedicated resources and full root access, usually for a fixed monthly price. It sits between cheap shared hosting and costly dedicated servers.
Example: A $6-a-month VPS is plenty for the blog, the mail relay and a small database.
Usage notes
Providers include DigitalOcean, Linode (now part of Akamai), Vultr, Hetzner and OVHcloud. Customers manage the operating system, updates and backups themselves unless they pay for a managed plan. The term belongs to web hosting; big clouds call the same thing an instance.
