VCD stands for Video CD, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
Format for storing full-motion video on standard compact discs using MPEG-1 compression, with quality similar to VHS. A feature film typically needed two discs.
Example: In the late 1990s we bought Hong Kong movies on VCD because DVD players were still expensive.
Usage notes
Sony, Philips, Matsushita and JVC defined Video CD in 1993 in the White Book standard. Although it never caught on in North America or Europe, it was enormously popular in China and Southeast Asia, where cheap players and discs made it the main home video format before DVD. Its resolution is 352 by 240 (NTSC) or 352 by 288 (PAL).
