1. Extended release

Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations

Brand-name suffix for extended-release products, as in Adderall XR, Seroquel XR, Glucophage XR and Effexor XR. It tells the patient the product is taken less often than the immediate-release version.

Example: Switched from quetiapine 100 mg BID to Seroquel XR 200 mg at bedtime.

XR products are not always dose-for-dose interchangeable with IR forms; quetiapine XR, for example, is titrated on its own schedule. Adderall XR capsules may be opened and sprinkled on applesauce, but the beads must be swallowed whole. In radiology, XR means X-ray, an unrelated use.

2. Extended reality

Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations

Umbrella term covering virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies together, used in industry, job titles and product names. The X is sometimes read as a placeholder for any of the realities.

Example: The company is hiring XR developers to build training simulations for headsets and phones.

The term spread in the late 2010s as companies sought one label for overlapping technologies. Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR chips power many headsets, and Google announced its Android XR platform for headsets and glasses in 2024. Industry groups and conferences increasingly prefer XR when discussing the field as a whole.

3. X-ray (radiograph)

Medical · Medical Imaging Abbreviations

Order and report shorthand for plain radiographs, the basic imaging test that passes X-rays through the body onto a detector to show bones, air and dense structures. Typical orders read XR chest, XR knee 3 views or XR hand, for fractures, joint disease, pneumonia and tube placement.

Example: XR right wrist 3 views: nondisplaced distal radius fracture.

Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-rays in 1895, and they are still called Roentgen rays in German. Plain films are fast and cheap with low radiation doses but show soft tissues poorly. Views are named by beam direction (PA, AP, lateral, oblique). Some hospital systems label radiographs "DX" or "CR" instead of XR.
