VRR stands for Variable refresh rate, a consumer electronics abbreviation.

Display feature that lets the screen's refresh rate follow the frame rate a console or graphics card is actually producing, eliminating screen tearing and reducing stutter when frame rates fluctuate.

Example: Turn on VRR on the PS5 and the TV so the game stays smooth when it dips below 60 frames.

Usage notes

Nvidia's G-Sync (2013) and AMD's FreeSync (2015, built on VESA's Adaptive-Sync standard) brought VRR to PC monitors; HDMI 2.1 added its own HDMI VRR for TVs and consoles. Xbox Series X and S consoles supported it at launch, and the PS5 added it in 2022. VRR works only within a range, such as 48 to 120 Hz, below which frame doubling may apply.
