1. University of Virginia

Education & Academia · University Abbreviations

Public university in Charlottesville founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, whose original Academical Village is, with Jefferson's Monticello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Cavaliers compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference and won the 2019 NCAA men's basketball title.

Example: She chose UVA over two Ivies because of its in-state tuition and honor code.

Students are often called Wahoos or 'Hoos. Jefferson listed founding the university, along with writing the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, on his tombstone. Its student-run honor system dates to 1842.

2. Ultraviolet A

Science & Engineering · Physics Abbreviations

Longest-wavelength band of ultraviolet light, 315 to 400 nanometers, which makes up about 95% of the UV reaching the ground. UVA penetrates deep into skin, causing tanning, wrinkles and contributing to skin cancer, and it passes through window glass; black lights emit mainly UVA.

Example: Look for "broad spectrum" on the label, which means the sunscreen protects against UVA as well as UVB.

UVA levels stay relatively constant through the day and year compared with UVB. The SPF number on sunscreens measures UVB protection only; UVA protection is indicated separately, for example by the EU's circled UVA logo or the PA+ rating in Asia. Tanning beds emit mostly UVA and are classified as carcinogenic to humans.
