Founded in 1914 as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, the El Paso campus is known for Bhutanese-style architecture. Most of its students are Hispanic, and it is a national leader in Hispanic graduates in engineering.
Example: UTEP's mining heritage explains why its teams are called the Miners.
Usage notes
In 1966 its basketball team, then Texas Western, won the NCAA title with the first all-Black starting lineup in a championship game, a story told in the film "Glory Road". The campus sits on the US–Mexico border, and many students commute from Ciudad Juárez. The Miners compete in Conference USA.
