USFS stands for United States Forest Service, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Manages 154 national forests and 20 national grasslands covering about 193 million acres for timber, grazing, recreation, watersheds and wildlife. It belongs to the Department of Agriculture, not the Interior, and is headed by the Chief of the Forest Service.
Example: The USFS closed several trailheads in the national forest because of the wildfire.
Usage notes
Created in 1905 with Gifford Pinchot as its first chief, it follows a multiple-use philosophy that differs from the preservation mission of the National Park Service. Smokey Bear, introduced in 1944, is its wildfire-prevention mascot. Its wildland firefighters make up one of the largest federal firefighting forces.
