USAO stands for United States Attorney's Office, a court abbreviation also used in government.
Federal prosecutor's office for a single judicial district, headed by a US Attorney and staffed by Assistant US Attorneys, paralegals and support staff. Each USAO prosecutes federal crimes in its district and represents the United States in civil litigation there, under the supervision of the Department of Justice.
Example: A spokesperson for the USAO declined to say whether more arrests were expected.
Usage notes
Offices are often identified by district, as in USAO-SDNY or USAO-EDVA. The Executive Office for United States Attorneys in Washington provides administrative support. US Attorneys are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate; an interim appointee named by the Attorney General serves 120 days, after which the district court may appoint one.
