Usage notes
Its origins date to 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized a chief engineer for the army. The Corps employs mostly civilians and manages many lakes and recreation areas created by its dams. People often call it simply "the Corps", and the abbreviation is pronounced letter by letter or "YOU-sace".
