TURBT stands for Transurethral resection of bladder tumor, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Cystoscopic surgery that removes bladder tumors through the urethra, providing both treatment and the tissue needed for diagnosis and staging. Including the detrusor muscle in the specimen is essential to determine whether the cancer is muscle-invasive.
Example: TURBT: 3 cm papillary tumor right lateral wall, muscle present; single dose intravesical gemcitabine.
Usage notes
A single post-operative dose of intravesical chemotherapy reduces recurrence of low-grade tumors. A repeat TURBT is often performed within about six weeks for high-grade disease. Non-muscle-invasive tumors may then receive intravesical BCG, while muscle-invasive cancer usually needs radical cystectomy or chemoradiation.
