Involuntary leakage of urine with effort or exertion, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting, caused by weak urethral support or sphincter function. Pregnancy and vaginal childbirth are major risk factors in women, and prostatectomy in men.

Example: SUI with leaks when running; pelvic floor PT first, consider midurethral sling if no improvement.

Pelvic floor muscle training, popularized by gynecologist Arnold Kegel in the 1940s, is first-line therapy. Midurethral slings, introduced in 1996, are the most common surgical treatment. The word "stress" refers to physical strain, not emotional stress. Men with SUI after prostatectomy may receive an artificial urinary sphincter.
