THAAD stands for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.

US Army missile defense system that intercepts short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles in their final phase of flight, inside or just outside the atmosphere, by striking them directly.

Example: A THAAD battery on Guam guards the island against ballistic missile threats.

Usage notes

THAAD interceptors destroy targets by "hit-to-kill" collision without explosive warheads. Built by Lockheed Martin, the system has been deployed to Guam and South Korea and sold to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Its 2017 deployment in South Korea angered China. Pronounced "thad."
