1. Target-controlled infusion
Medical · Anesthesia Abbreviations
Computerized infusion system that uses pharmacokinetic models to adjust intravenous anesthetic delivery, typically propofol and remifentanil, so a chosen concentration in the blood or brain is reached and maintained. The clinician sets a target concentration instead of an infusion rate.
Example: Propofol TCI, Marsh model, effect-site target 3.5 mcg/mL.
In clinical use in Europe, Australia and Asia since the late 1990s, TCI pumps have not been approved by the FDA for anesthesia in the United States. Common models include Marsh and Schnider for propofol and Minto for remifentanil. TCI is closely linked to total intravenous anesthesia.
2. Topical calcineurin inhibitors
Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory creams and ointments, tacrolimus and pimecrolimus, used for atopic dermatitis and other conditions on delicate skin such as the face, eyelids and skin folds. Unlike steroids they do not thin the skin.
Example: Eyelid eczema; switch from hydrocortisone to TCI (tacrolimus 0.1 percent ointment) twice daily.
Tacrolimus ointment was approved in 2000 and pimecrolimus cream in 2001. In 2006 the FDA added a boxed warning about a theoretical cancer risk, but large long-term studies have not shown an increase. Burning or stinging during the first days of use is common and usually fades.
3. Turks and Caicos Islands
Geography & Places · Country Name Abbreviations
British Overseas Territory southeast of the Bahamas, made up of about 40 islands and cays. Cockburn Town on Grand Turk is the capital, Providenciales is the tourist center, and Grace Bay is often ranked among the world's best beaches.
Example: Direct flights to TCI land at Providenciales International Airport.
TC and TCA are the ISO codes, and the currency is the US dollar. Local businesses and the territory's government use TCI widely in names and branding.
