AGEP stands for Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, a dermatology abbreviation.
Drug reaction that causes sudden fever and dozens to hundreds of tiny sterile pustules on red, swollen skin, beginning in skin folds, usually within one to two days of starting the culprit drug. Beta-lactam antibiotics and macrolides are frequent causes.
Example: Fever and pinpoint pustules in axillae and groin 24 hours after amoxicillin: AGEP, stop antibiotic.
Usage notes
AGEP usually resolves within about two weeks after the drug is stopped, with superficial peeling. It can be confused with pustular psoriasis, but a recent new medication and rapid onset favor AGEP. Patch testing may later identify the cause.
