SSHD stands for Solid-state hybrid drive, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Hard drive with a small built-in flash cache, typically 8 GB, that stores frequently used files for faster access while keeping the large, cheap capacity of spinning platters. It works as a single drive with no software setup.
Example: The console upgrade guide suggested an SSHD as a budget compromise between speed and space.
Usage notes
Seagate's Momentus XT, launched in 2010, popularized the category, and later models were sold under the FireCuda name. Because the cache is small, SSHDs speed up boot times and repeated tasks but not large file transfers. Falling SSD prices largely made them obsolete by the 2020s.
