ssDNA stands for Single-stranded DNA, a genetics abbreviation.

DNA consisting of one strand rather than a paired double helix. It occurs in some virus genomes and transiently during DNA replication and repair, and synthetic ssDNA serves as primers, probes and editing templates.

Example: An ssDNA donor template carrying the corrected sequence was co-injected with Cas9.

Usage notes

Viruses with ssDNA genomes include parvoviruses and the adeno-associated viruses (AAV) used as gene therapy vectors. Single-strand binding proteins coat exposed ssDNA in cells to protect it. Heat or alkali separates dsDNA into ssDNA, a process called denaturation or melting.
