T2T stands for Telomere-to-telomere, a genetics abbreviation.
Describes a genome assembly that runs without gaps from one end of each chromosome to the other. The T2T Consortium published the first complete human genome sequence, T2T-CHM13, in 2022, adding about 200 million base pairs missing from the previous reference.
Example: The T2T assembly finally resolved the centromeres and the short arms of the acrocentric chromosomes.
Usage notes
The breakthrough relied on long-read sequencing from PacBio and Oxford Nanopore technologies. The sequence came from a cell line with two identical copies of each chromosome, simplifying assembly. A complete human Y chromosome followed in 2023.
