SNV stands for Single-nucleotide variant, a genetics abbreviation.
Change of a single DNA letter at a particular position, regardless of how common it is in the population. In clinical and cancer sequencing reports, SNVs include rare inherited variants and new mutations acquired by tumors.
Example: Tumor sequencing identified 42 somatic SNVs, including a known hotspot mutation in KRAS.
Usage notes
SNV is the more neutral term preferred in clinical genomics, since "polymorphism" implies a common variant. SNVs are classified by effect as synonymous (no amino acid change), missense (a different amino acid) or nonsense (a premature stop codon).
