PLU stands for Price look-up code, an e-commerce & retail abbreviation.
Four- or five-digit number on stickers attached to fresh produce, letting cashiers identify the item, such as 4011 for standard yellow bananas, and scales to price it by weight.
Example: Enter PLU 4011 for the bananas at the self-checkout.
Usage notes
Codes are assigned by the International Federation for Produce Standards. Conventional produce uses four-digit codes in the 3000 and 4000 ranges, and organic items add a prefix 9 to make five digits. A proposed "8" prefix for genetically modified produce was never adopted in practice.
