1. Penalty minutes

Sports · Ice Hockey Abbreviations

Total minutes of penalties assessed to a player or team: two for a minor, five for a major, ten for a misconduct. PIM was traditionally a measure of a player's toughness.

Example: The enforcer piled up 15 PIM in the second period alone.

Dave "Tiger" Williams holds the NHL career record with 3,966 penalty minutes, and Dave Schultz recorded 472 in 1974-75. Fighting has declined sharply since the 2000s, and PIM totals have dropped with it. Pronounced as letters.

2. Potentially inappropriate medication

Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations

Drug whose risks generally outweigh its benefits in older adults, or in a specific condition, when safer alternatives exist. Lists such as the American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria and STOPP identify PIMs.

Example: PIM review: diphenhydramine and glyburide flagged; deprescribing plan discussed.

Geriatrician Mark Beers published the first criteria in 1991, and the American Geriatrics Society now updates them regularly, most recently in 2023. Common PIMs include strongly anticholinergic drugs, benzodiazepines, long-acting sulfonylureas and chronic NSAIDs. Prescribing a PIM is sometimes justified, so the lists guide judgment rather than forbid use.

3. Product information management

Business & Finance · E-commerce & Retail Abbreviations

Software and processes for storing, enriching and distributing product data such as titles, descriptions, specifications, images and translations to websites, marketplaces, catalogs and retail partners from one central source.

Example: We update product copy once in the PIM and it flows to Amazon, our site and the print catalog.

PIM systems are common at retailers and brands with thousands of products and many sales channels.
