1. Titanium
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Titanium, element 22, combines steel-like strength with about 45% less weight and outstanding corrosion resistance, which suits it to jet engines, airframes, hip implants and dental posts. Most titanium mined, however, ends up as titanium dioxide, the bright white pigment in paint, paper, plastics and sunscreen.
Example: The implant is machined from Grade 5 Ti, an alloy containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium.
Cornish clergyman William Gregor identified a new metal in a black sand in 1791, and Martin Heinrich Klaproth independently found it in rutile in 1795, naming it after the Titans of Greek mythology. Pure metal was hard to obtain until William Kroll developed his magnesium-reduction process in the late 1930s. Titanium jewelry is often marketed as hypoallergenic because it rarely triggers metal allergies.
2. Texas Instruments (TI)
Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations
American semiconductor company making analog and embedded processing chips used in cars, industrial equipment and electronics, as well as its well-known graphing calculators. Headquartered in Dallas.
Example: Students still buy the TI-84 for high school math classes.
Founded in 1930 as Geophysical Service Inc., an oil exploration company, it became Texas Instruments in 1951. TI engineer Jack Kilby demonstrated the first integrated circuit in 1958 and later received the Nobel Prize in Physics (2000). TI also produced the first commercial silicon transistor in 1954.
3. Terminal ileum (TI)
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Final segment of the small intestine, joining the colon at the ileocecal valve in the right lower quadrant. It absorbs vitamin B12 and bile acids and is the most common site of Crohn disease, examined during colonoscopy by passing the scope through the valve.
Example: TI intubated and appears normal; random biopsies taken.
Disease or surgical removal of the terminal ileum can cause vitamin B12 deficiency and bile acid diarrhea. Intussusception in young children usually begins at the ileocecal junction. Ileal Crohn disease is evaluated with MR or CT enterography. Ti with a lowercase i is the chemical symbol for titanium.
4. Therapeutic index (TI)
Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations
Ratio between the dose that causes toxicity and the dose that produces the desired effect, classically TD50 divided by ED50. A high TI means a wide margin of safety; a low TI means small changes in level can cause harm.
Example: Lithium's low TI means levels above 1.5 mEq/L can produce toxicity.
In animal studies TI was historically calculated as LD50/ED50. Drugs with a low TI usually need blood level monitoring, careful dose titration and attention to interactions. Related terms include therapeutic window and therapeutic range.
5. Tenant improvements (TI)
Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations
Construction and alterations made to a commercial space to suit a specific tenant, such as walls, flooring, lighting and kitchens, often funded partly by the landlord through a tenant improvement allowance (TIA) quoted per square foot.
Example: The landlord is giving $60 per square foot in TI to build out our offices.
TI allowances are a key negotiating point in office leasing and tend to rise when vacancy is high. Unused allowance sometimes can be applied to rent.
6. Titus
Religion · Bible Book Abbreviations
Three-chapter Pastoral Epistle to Titus, Paul's coworker left to organize churches on the island of Crete, with instructions on appointing elders and on sound teaching. It famously quotes a Cretan poet saying that "Cretans are always liars" (1:12).
Example: The qualifications for elders in Ti 1:5–9 parallel those in 1 Timothy.
SBL leaves Titus unabbreviated, Chicago's traditional list uses Tit. and Catholic Bibles and Chicago's short forms use Ti. The quotation about Cretans is often discussed as the "liar paradox". Titus was a Greek convert who accompanied Paul to Jerusalem.
