1. Thailand
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Thailand, capital Bangkok, alpha-3 THA, is the only Southeast Asian country never colonized by a European power. The baht trades as THB, and Thai dates follow the Buddhist calendar, 543 years ahead of the Gregorian.
Example: Prices switch to baht once the store's region is set to TH.
Thailand was called Siam until 1939. The language code th means Thai, as in th-TH. Bangkok's full ceremonial name is one of the longest place names in the world.
2. Thursday (Th)
Units & Measurements · Day of the Week Abbreviations
Two-letter abbreviation for Thursday on schedules, calendars and forms, used to separate it from T or Tu for Tuesday. Class listings such as TTh mean Tuesday and Thursday.
Example: Swim lessons: Tu and Th at 4:30 p.m., Sa at 10 a.m.
Two-letter day codes (Mo, Tu, We, Th, Fr, Sa, Su) are used by the iCalendar standard for recurring events, which is why they appear in calendar files and exports. Th is also the chemical symbol for thorium, and lowercase th is the suffix in ordinal numbers such as 4th.
3. Thorium (Th)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Weakly radioactive and about three times as abundant as uranium in Earth's crust, thorium (atomic number 90) can be bred into fissile uranium-233 in nuclear reactors, an approach pursued in India and in molten-salt reactor designs. Thorium oxide once made gas-lantern mantles glow brightly.
Example: India's long-term nuclear plan aims to use its large Th reserves in the third stage.
Jöns Jacob Berzelius identified thorium in 1829 in a mineral sent by Norwegian mineralogist Morten Thrane Esmark, and named it after Thor, the Norse god of thunder. Gerhard Schmidt and Marie Curie independently found in 1898 that thorium is radioactive. Thorium-232 has a half-life of about 14 billion years, roughly the age of the universe.
