THA stands for Total hip arthroplasty, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.
Replacement of both the femoral head and the hip socket with artificial components, usually for end-stage osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis or certain hip fractures. It reliably relieves pain and restores function, and modern implants often last more than 20 years.
Example: Right THA via direct anterior approach POD 1; ambulating 150 feet with walker, home tomorrow.
Usage notes
British surgeon John Charnley developed the low-friction hip replacement in the early 1960s, and a 2007 Lancet article called it "the operation of the century". Approaches include posterior, lateral and direct anterior. Main risks are dislocation, infection, blood clots and leg-length difference. THR (total hip replacement) is the more common patient-facing term.
