TKA stands for Total knee arthroplasty, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.
Replacement of the damaged surfaces of the femur, tibia and often the kneecap with metal and plastic components, most commonly for severe osteoarthritis. It is among the most frequently performed elective operations in the US.
Example: Left TKA POD 2, flexion 85 degrees, pain controlled; discharge with outpatient PT.
Usage notes
Most patients are satisfied, but a meaningful minority report persistent pain or stiffness, a higher rate than after hip replacement. Rehabilitation focuses on regaining knee bend and straightening. Robotic and computer-assisted techniques aim to improve alignment. Arthrofibrosis (stiffness) may require manipulation under anesthesia.
