1. Negative temperature coefficient (thermistor)
Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations
Describes a material or component whose resistance decreases as temperature rises; NTC thermistors are inexpensive, sensitive temperature sensors used in thermostats, battery packs, 3D printers, car engines and medical thermometers.
Example: The 3D printer's hot end uses a 100k NTC thermistor to read nozzle temperature.
Thermistors are named by their resistance at 25 °C, such as 10k, and characterized by a Beta value. Large NTC thermistors are also used as inrush current limiters in power supplies: cold, they resist the surge at switch-on, then warm up and drop their resistance.
2. No-trade clause
Sports · Ice Hockey Abbreviations
Contract provision that prevents a team from trading a player without his consent, often modified to list teams he can or cannot be traded to. In the NHL, players become eligible for such clauses when they reach unrestricted free agency eligibility.
Example: His modified NTC lets him block trades to 16 teams.
A full NTC requires consent for any trade; a modified clause names a limited list. Other leagues have similar terms; in MLB, players with 10 years of service and five with one team gain automatic no-trade rights, known as 10-and-5 rights.
