MOSFET stands for Metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor, an electronics & electrical abbreviation.
Transistor in which a voltage on an insulated gate controls current flowing between source and drain through a semiconductor channel. MOSFETs are the building blocks of digital chips, with billions on a modern processor, and power MOSFETs switch currents in chargers, motor drives and power supplies.
Example: The board uses a logic-level MOSFET so the 3.3 V microcontroller pin can switch the 12 V LED strip.
Usage notes
Mohamed Atalla and Dawon Kahng built the first MOSFET at Bell Labs in 1959. It is the most frequently manufactured device in history, with an estimated 13 sextillion made by 2018. Devices come in n-channel and p-channel types, and silicon carbide and gallium nitride versions handle higher voltages and frequencies. Pronounced "MOSS-fet."
