1. No refills

Medical · Prescription Abbreviations

Notation on a prescription meaning it may be filled only once. Federal law already forbids refills on Schedule II controlled substances, while Schedule III and IV prescriptions may be refilled up to five times within six months.

Example: Oxycodone 5 mg #12, NR; reassess pain at follow-up visit.

Sometimes written "0 refills" or the Latin "non rep." (non repetatur, do not repeat). Leaving the refill field blank is usually interpreted as no refills, but writing NR or 0 prevents a number from being added later. NR in lab reports means "nonreactive", an unrelated use.

2. New Radio

Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations

Name of the 5G radio interface standardized by 3GPP, covering how phones and base stations communicate over the air. Phones may display "5G NR", and 5G frequency bands are labeled with an "n", such as n78.

Example: The phone supports 5G NR bands n41, n71 and n78.

3GPP defined two frequency ranges: FR1, below about 7 GHz, and FR2, the millimeter-wave bands above 24 GHz. NR uses flexible OFDM numerology, allowing wider channels and shorter time slots than LTE. "NR-U" refers to operation in unlicensed spectrum. 5G NR can run with an LTE anchor (non-standalone) or with a 5G core (standalone).

3. National record

Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations

Best mark ever by an athlete from a given country in an event. National federations ratify these, and results lists mark them NR.

Example: His 13:05 was an NR, breaking a mark that had stood for 22 years.

Continental records (AR for area record, such as ER for European or AM for Americas) sit between national and world records. NR is also common in film ratings shorthand, meaning "not rated".

4. Nauru

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

One of the world's smallest countries at 21 square kilometres, a Pacific island republic with no official capital; government offices are in Yaren District. Phosphate mining once made it one of the richest nations per person.

Example: Australia's offshore processing center in NR has drawn international criticism.

The alpha-3 code is NRU. Nauru uses the Australian dollar and has about 12,000 residents.

5. Near (Nr)

Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations

Used in British addresses and directions to place a small village near a better-known town, as in Upper Slaughter, nr Cheltenham. Royal Mail does not need it, because the postcode identifies the location.

Example: Rose Cottage, Upper Slaughter, nr Cheltenham

Before postcodes, nr helped sorting offices route mail to tiny hamlets. Estate agents still use it to borrow the prestige of a nearby town.
