NB-IoT stands for Narrowband Internet of Things, a telecom abbreviation.
Low-power cellular technology for devices that send small amounts of data infrequently, such as smart meters, parking sensors and asset trackers, offering deep indoor coverage and battery life of up to ten years.
Example: The water meters report readings daily over NB-IoT from basement cabinets.
Usage notes
NB-IoT was standardized in 3GPP Release 13 in 2016 and uses a channel only about 200 kHz wide. It sacrifices speed and mobility for efficiency, unlike its sibling LTE-M, which supports moving devices and voice. Both are part of 5G's massive machine-type communications plans.
