1. Month to date

Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations · also used in measurement

Cumulative figure from the first day of the current month up to today, used in sales dashboards, budgets, payroll and investment performance reports. It lets managers compare progress with monthly targets before the month closes.

Example: MTD sales are $410,000, putting us at 82 percent of the monthly target with a week to go.

Often paired with YTD and QTD in reports. In the UK, MTD more commonly refers to Making Tax Digital, the HMRC program requiring digital record-keeping and online tax returns. In banking, MTD balances show activity since the start of the statement month.

2. Motion to dismiss

Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations

Motion asking the court to dismiss a complaint, in whole or in part, without reaching the facts, typically because it fails to state a legally valid claim or the court lacks jurisdiction. It is often the defendant's first response to a lawsuit.

Example: The bank's MTD argues the complaint pleads only conclusions, not facts showing fraud.

In federal court the common grounds appear in Rule 12(b), including lack of subject-matter jurisdiction (12(b)(1)), lack of personal jurisdiction (12(b)(2)) and failure to state a claim (12(b)(6)). Bell Atlantic v. Twombly (2007) and Ashcroft v. Iqbal (2009) require plausible factual allegations. Dismissal is often granted with leave to amend.

3. Making Tax Digital

Business & Finance · Tax Abbreviations

HM Revenue & Customs program requiring businesses and individuals to keep digital records and file through compatible software. It has applied to VAT-registered businesses since 2019 and extends to sole traders and landlords from April 2026, starting with those whose qualifying income exceeds £50,000.

Example: Our accountant moved us to new software to comply with MTD for Income Tax.

The income tax phase requires quarterly updates plus a year-end final declaration in place of the traditional annual return for those affected. The threshold is scheduled to fall to £30,000 in 2027 and £20,000 in 2028. In accounting, MTD more often means month to date.

4. Maximum tolerated dose

Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations

Highest dose of a drug that can be given without unacceptable side effects, usually defined in early cancer trials as the dose at which only a small fraction of patients have dose-limiting toxicity. Later trials often test this dose.

Example: Escalation stopped at 240 mg after two DLTs; MTD declared at 180 mg.

The classic "3+3" trial design adds patients in groups of three and escalates until dose-limiting toxicities appear. Newer targeted and immune therapies may work at doses well below the MTD, so the FDA's Project Optimus encourages dose-optimization studies rather than defaulting to the MTD.
