1. Medication therapy management
Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations
Pharmacist service that reviews all of a patient's medicines, prescription and OTC, to find problems such as duplications, interactions, nonadherence or unnecessary drugs. Medicare Part D plans must offer MTM to eligible beneficiaries.
Example: Your Part D plan offers a free MTM review by phone with a pharmacist.
MTM was established in Medicare Part D by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, starting in 2006. Its core is an annual comprehensive medication review (CMR) with a written summary. Eligibility is based on multiple chronic diseases, multiple Part D drugs and high drug costs.
2. Mark-to-market
Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations
Practice of valuing assets and liabilities at current market prices rather than historical cost, so gains and losses are recognized as prices change. Banks, trading firms and futures exchanges mark positions to market daily.
Example: The derivatives desk booked a $40 million MTM loss after rates jumped on Friday.
In futures markets, daily MTM settlement moves cash between accounts according to price changes, which triggers margin calls. Enron's aggressive use of mark-to-market accounting for long-term energy contracts is a well-known example of abuse. In US tax law, securities traders can elect mark-to-market treatment under Section 475(f).
